The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has in a weekend statement condemned the brutal and deadly attacks on members of the Guyana Police Force which it said are acts designed to subvert “our” freedoms.

The statement reads:
“The People's Progressive Party (PPP) wishes to condemn the brutal and deadly attacks on members of the Guyana Police Force. Already in this year, bandits have killed two policemen and seriously injured another. Friday evening last, January 3, 2003, the East Ruimveldt Police Outpost was the target of another bandit assault.

“The consistent attacks on the police suggest that these assaults on the subjects of the law are well orchestrated. Further, these are direct attempts to undermine the democratic state by forces that want to revert to an undemocratic past.

“The assault on the Police must also be seen as linked to those that have been consistently attacking press freedom, an integral enterprise of democracy in our country. It is apposite to recall that in January 1998, the building that housed Channel 65 (MTV) and Channel 69 (NTN) had channa bombs and grenades thrown at it.

“It seems as if the same forces attempted to torch the "Kaieteur News" printery on Tuesday, December 31, 2002.

“The PPP calls on all democratic minded people to condemn these acts designed to subvert our freedoms. We also call for support and solidarity for the Guyana Police Force in their fight against the criminals.

“This is not a time to equivocate; we must support the officers of the law.

“The PPP extends its deepest sympathy to the family of the murdered officers and to the Guyana Police Force on this grievous loss and wish those injured a speedy recovery.
