In an invited comment on the unfortunate burning of the Kaieteur News printery on Tuesday last, Information Liaison to the President Mr. Robert Persaud has strongly condemned the act. “The torching of the printery of Kaieteur News was an outrageous act and must be condemned in the strongest possible term,” he told the Government Information Agency (GINA).

Emphasizing the policy of Government regarding freedom of the press, Mr. Persaud continued “The Government defends strongly the right of the publication to express its views freely in conformity with the laws of the country. This fundamental right must be respected by all.”

Government has championed the freedom of the press and to this end, last year; President Bharrat Jagdeo signed the Chapultepec Declaration, which represents the freedom of expression of the Media in Guyana.

In an effort to assist the management of Kaieteur News to continue its publication during this period of great inconvenience, the state-owned Guyana National Newspapers Limited (GNNL) make available its printing facility for publication of last Wednesday’s edition of the newspaper.

The pressroom of the newspapers’ printery at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, was,

on Tuesday last, enveloped by flames, allegedly deliberately set alight by armed intruders resulting in millions of dollars in losses.
