Programme of funeral arrangements for the late opposition leader

Guyanese will today begin saying their farewells to Leader of the Opposition Desmond Hoyte SC MP BA LLB, as the cortege bearing his remains travels through South Georgetown en route to Congress Place where there will be a two-hour programme to celebrate his life.

Tour of South Georgetown

The route the cortege will take on leaving Merriman's Funeral Home around 9:00am is:

South along Lime street to Durban street - west to Camp street - south to Russell street through to Hunter street to West Front road, east to the Police Outpost, north along Cemetery road to Princess street, west to Haley street, north along Haley street to Norton street, east along Norton street to Mandela Avenue, north along Mandela Avenue into Sheriff street, east into Duncan street to the Eastern highway, north along Eastern highway to Congress Place.

On leaving the Merriman's Funeral Home, Hoyte's casket will be borne to the hearse by Allan Munroe, Ivor Allen, Patrick Roberts, Desmond Fernandes, Florence Bourne and Genevieve Allen.

Congress Place Farewell

At Congress Place the body will be borne from the hearse to the tent in Congress Place where it will lie in state for public viewing from about 10:00am to 1:00pm by Mark Walkes, George Moore, Lloyd Joseph, Seelo Baichan and Carvil Duncan.

At the end of the public viewing period, the body will be borne into the Congress Place auditorium by Basil Williams, Ricky Khan, Patrick Yarde, Lance Baptiste, Gordon Bradford and Colin Bynoe.

Farewell programme at Congress Place

The programme celebrating Hoyte's life will be chaired by party vice-chairman, Vincent Alexander, and will include prayers and tributes by organisations representing the Christian, Hindu, Muslim and Apostolic faiths. There will be a statement by General Secretary Oscar Clarke; musical contributions by the Mighty Canary, Ras Camo Williams, First Born, Bharrat Kissoon, the Sad'r Islamic Anjuman, the Georgetown Quartet, Jean Roberts, the Yoruba Singers and African Drummers; tributes from each of the ten Regions; the Trades Union Movement, representatives of the Amerindian community, the Bar Association, African Cultural Development Association (ACDA), the National Congress of Women (NCW), Guyana Youth and Students Movement (GYSM), the Parliamentary group, the Reform component and Robert Corbin, PNCR chairman who is carrying out the functions of the leader of the party. At Congress members of the GYSM will receive and display all floral tributes and cards received during the programme.

After the celebration programme, Premchan Singh Benjamin Nedd, Cheryl Sampson, Jerome Khan, Ranwell Jordan, Keith Clarke and Yvonne Harewood Benn will bear the body from the auditorium to the hearse.

Tour of North Georgetown

The cortege will then leave Congress Place travelling west along First street to Sheriff street, south along Sheriff street to Garnett street, west along Garnett street to Vlissengen road, south along Vlissengen road to Crown street, west along the bridge into Irving street, north along Irving street to Lamaha street, west along Lamaha street to Camp street, south along Camp street to Durban street, east along Durban street to Lime street, north along Lime street to Merriman's Funeral Home.

At the Funeral Home Dennis Glasgow, Peter Livingstone, Bevon Currie, Ralwayne Payne, Noel Waithe and Kenneth Sealey will bear the body from the hearse to the parlour.

Vigil by GYSM

At the Funeral Home the GYSM will mount a vigil from 4:00pm until 9:00am tomorrow morning.

Viewing at the Square of the Revolution

Tomorrow, which the government has declared a Day of National Mourning, the body will be borne from the funeral home to the hearse by Roger Hoyte, Dr Dalgleish Joseph, James Patterson, Deborah Backer, Haslyn Parris and Artie Ricknauth. The cortege will leave the funeral home at 9:30am and travel north along Lime street to Brickdam, east along Brickdam to the Square of the Revolution.

At the Square of the Revolution, George Hoyte, Linda Haley, Cammie Ramsa-roop, Lennox McKenzie, Naipaul Ramadar and Lachman Sammy will bear the body to the tent under where it will lie in state until 12 noon for viewing by the public.

At 12:30, Dennis Jaikaran, Faith Harding, Supriya Singh, Michael Harris, Noel Black-man and Tony Vieira will bear the body to the hearse, which will then travel west along Brickdam to the Public Buildings.

Programme for the State Funeral Ceremony at the Public Buildings

At the Public Buildings, Sase Naraine, Deryck Bernard, Oscar Clarke, Vincent Alexander, Amna Ally and Khemraj Ramjattan will bear the body from the hearse to lie in state in the forecourt. On the arrival of the cortege at 12.30 pm the body will be greeted by a General Salute following which Cabinet, Parliament, VIPs, the Diplomatic Corps and Heads of the Joint Services will view the body.

The formal proceedings will begin at 1:30pm with a statement by Clarissa Riehl MP, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly who will chair the programme. Prayers by Rev Barrington Litchmore, Pandit Thakechandra Ramnauth and Brother Yusuf Rahman will follow her statement.

The Woodside Choir International will then sing the Song of the Republic (Daniels) following which Jenelle Dyer and Yonette Walton will read Ecclesiastes Chapter 3 Verses 1-8.

Representatives of Trades Union Movement and the Private Sector Commission will pay short tributes, which will be followed by a musical tribute by the combined band of the Joint Services.

Tributes will also be paid by Robert Corbin on behalf of the PNCR and by representatives of the GAP/WPA, ROAR, The United Force and the PPP/Civic. These will be followed by a tribute in song - How Lovely are Thy Dwellings - by Paul Cort.

Former Attorney General and now World Court Tribunal Judge, Dr Mohammed Shahabuddeen, CARICOM Secretary General Edwin Carrington, and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, the Ambassador of Cuba, Jose Manuel Inclan Embade, will then pay their tributes.

There will then be a musical tribute - My Hero - by Amanda Vieira which would then be followed by a tribute by Speaker of the National Assembly Ralph Ramkarran.

After the Woodside Choirs International render the Hymn of Guyana's Children, President Bharrat Jagdeo will make a statement and Norwell Hinds and Eusi Anderson, who will read from Ecclesiasticus Chapter 44 Verses 1-15, will follow him.

Keith Massiah will read the eulogy after which will follow the Military Honours.

At the completion of the programme, Clarence Hughes, Rex McKay, Robert Corbin, together with honorary pallbearers Muntaz Alli, Andy Goveia, Chandra N Sharma, Mortimer Mingo, Volda Lawrence, Ernest Elliott and Winston Augustin will bear the body to the hearse.

Route to the Botanical Gardens

The cortege leaves Parliament Buildings at about 3:30pm for the Seven Ponds, Place of Heroes, in the Botanical Gardens. It will travel north along Avenue of the Republic, east along Regent street, north onto Cummings Street, East along Church Road, south along Albert street, west along North Road, south on Light street, and then east along Regent street to the Botanical Gardens.

At the graveside, Stanley Ming MP will chair the farewell programme. He will make an opening statement that will be followed by a musical farewell by the combined Joint Services Band

Donald Robinson, Wins-ton Murray, and Joan Mabel Baveghems will read farewell messages and these will be followed by a rendition of Lead Me Lord by the Wood-side Choirs International.

After the final viewing by family and friends, Lisa Mae James will recite Martin Carter's 'Death of a Comrade.' The Rev Eustace Semple will perform the last rites and a bugler will sound the Last Post.
