The Georgetown City Council at a meeting yesterday agreed to pay out salary increases for 2002.

In a statement released yesterday, the council said that, in a meeting with the Guyana Labour Union and the Guyana Local Government Officers Union on December 12th, it was agreed to pay increases retroactive to July 1st, 2002 in the following manner: Categories 10-16 - 4.5%; categories 7-9 - 6% and categories 2-6 - 8%.

According to the Council, although there was no communication between the unions and the council, there was an apparent rejection of the offer by way of a letter sent to the Chief Labour Officer dated 12-12-02 seeking conciliation.

The council then met again yesterday and agreed to pay out the increases as stated, indicating that that was their final offer to the unions.

The unions had said that the date of retroactivity should have been January 1, 2003 and the figure should have been higher.
