In light of security concerns, the army and police will forego traditional New Year’s Eve 2002 celebrations.

According to official sources in both of the Disciplined Services, this marks the first time in the history of the annual tradition that the event has been cancelled.

Both the police and the army stage dances on Old Year’s night at which prominent persons are invited including the President and the Minister of Home Affairs.

In February, five high-profile prisoners escaped from the Camp Street prison facility killing a prison guard and critically injuring another. The country has since been gripped by a tidal wave of serious crime. Eleven law enforcement officers have been slain and three of the escapees, Dale Moore, Andrew Douglas and Mark Fraser have also been killed.
