The Christmas Village and Gift Show 2002 opened yesterday at the Sophia Exhibition Centre with the lighting of a 25-foot fabricated Christmas tree. Other trees inside the Centre were lighted too.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Manzoor Nadir and his wife Maria took photographs with a group of children from the immediate and neighbouring communities.

A few booths showcasing local art and craft and other items as well as some food stalls were already open when Stabroek News visited the Centre at around 6 pm. The Majestics Band and the Sophia Dance Group also provided entertainment.

When Stabroek News spoke with the ministry’s Permanent Secretary Sonia Roopnauth on Thursday, she said approximately 34 booths were expected to be in place at the event and patrons are welcome to enjoy themselves between 5-10 pm each day until Monday.

Adults and children are required to pay an entry fee of $300 and $100, respectively.

A Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said the event, which is in its second year, is part of the ministry’s plan to provide nightly entertainment leading up to the Christmas season.
