The three employees within the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security who were implicated in the Old Age Pension Scam were dismissed yesterday.

A source close to the ministry told this newspaper yesterday that the officers reported to work yesterday morning and were greeted with their dismissal letters which were handed to them by an office assistant. The three officers who had held senior posts within the Ministry were earlier in the investigations questioned by the police and are still required to report to the Criminal Investigation Department headquarters every day. The officers’ dismissal came in the wake of an announcement by a Post Office official that seven postal officers are likely to be charged by police.

The scam which involves the printing and cashing of fake vouchers by postal employees and senior officers within the ministry is estimated to have cost the government $34M between May and September. The Post Office has completed its investigations and handed the information to the police and the Auditor General’s (AG) Department. The Guyana Police Force according to Assistant Superintendent David Ramnarine is awaiting the report from the AG after which charges would be laid. (Nigel Williams)
