Guyana’s squash `Queen’ Nicolette Fernandes secured a bronze medal and is certain of another as she contests the 19th Central American and Pan American Games in El Salvador.

According to reports from the Spanish speaking country, Fernandes copped a bronze medal in the women’s individual singles competition, and, together with London based Guyanese and former Caribbean ladies champion Jillian Griffith-Lilico, marched into the semi-final of the women’s doubles with a 2-1 victory over the Jamaican pair of Karen Anderson and Gillian Burrowes.

The local pair is slated to meet Mexico’s Samantha Teran and Diana Huerta in the women’s doubles semi-final today.

By virtue of reaching the semi-final round, the local pair is certain of at least a bronze, and should they get past the Mexicans then they will be certain of silver.

Teran won the women’s individual gold medal and Huerta the silver.

The winners of today’s match will meet the winners of the other semi-final which was to be contested between the Colombian pair of Tamayo Restrep and Lanfranco De Reyes and the El Salvadorean pair of Ana Vega de Miguel and Frayda Aisemberg yesterday.

Up to press time, no results were forthcoming from the men’s doubles quarter final where Guyana’s Luke Fraser and Maxim Weithers were to oppose Jamaica’s S. Smith and E. Burrowes.

The winner of the men’s doubles quarter-final will meet the winners of the other quarter-final between Colombia’s Diestro Samper and Santiago Montoya and the Bermudan pair of Nicholas Kymes and James Stout, in the semi-final.

Meanwhile, Guyana’s two-man boxing team are expected to go into action tomorrow.
