The Inter Religious Organi-sation (IRO) is confident of widespread support from religious bodies throughout the designated route for the human chain to link the PNC’s Congress Place to the PPP’s Freedom House on Monday, December 9.

The formation of the human chain will constitute the highlight of a day of Prayer, Reconciliation and Public Witness organised by the IRO and which is expected to attract some 5,000 representatives from the country’s main religious faiths.

According to Elizabeth Cummings, a member of the planning committee for the event, “...there is no likelihood of difficulty in amassing the supporters necessary to form the chain.”

Stabroek News understands that various religious groups, with places of worship along the specified route, have agreed to use these as assembly points for prayer sessions commencing at 8:30 a.m.

Further, the actual linking of the hands via Garnett Street - Vlissengen Road and Church and Wellington Streets, will take place at 10 am while a declaration of peace for Guyana is scheduled to be read at noon.

Cummings said a public awareness campaign involving radio, television and newspaper advertisements will be launched shortly to encourage backing by members of surrounding communities. She added that drivers are asked to toot their horns just before the peace declaration is read in acknowledgement of the event’s significance.

A press release had said one of the IRO’s chief goals in coordinating the symbolic event is to remove the ethnic, social, economic and religious barriers embodied in the current crisis facing Guyana and Guyanese.
