Early in the morning of Sunday February 18, 2001, Andrew `Sixhead' Lewis became the first Guyanese boxer fighting under the Golden Arrowhead, to win a world boxing title. His victory was followed by nationwide celebrations which included the declaration of a national holiday and several accolades being bestowed on the new champion. Now Guyana prepares to welcome home two new world champions. Within eight days of each other Guyanese fighters Wayne `Big Truck' Braithwaite and `Vicious' Vivian Harris captured the WBC Cruiserweight and the WBA Junior Welter-weight titles respectively. This week we asked the man/ woman-in-the-street for their ideas on how Guyana should celebrate and reward its new world champions.

Clairmonte Frank - teacher: `These young men have really done Guyana well by putting us on the map again. We are once again being recognised. Accomplishing this certainly wasn't an easy task for them considering all the sacrifices that they had to make. What Guyana can do for these guys is to honour them in some tangible way. One way in which they could do that is to create a scholarship or fund in their names for upcoming Guyanese boxers or even for persons in other sports. They could even give scholarships in their names for University or colleges. So, apart from just material gifts, which nobody is going to remember... they are going to remember the Braithwaite Scholarship or Award or the Harris Scholarship or Award. By doing this their names are going to be immortalised. It would be an encouragement for young people and not only for up and coming boxers but also other athletes who have the sound academic background. They would be able to have an opportunity through the award for their development.'

Tessa Stewart - technician: `I don't think that every time a boxer wins a world title we should give them a national holiday, because if ten boxers win titles this year we would have ten extra holidays plus the other thirteen in the year. I think we should give them land and a house like they did for `Sixhead' Lewis and they should name a street or avenue after them or place their names on a government building or school. Or maybe in honour of them they should emphasise more on sports in Guyana, because they have made us proud. They went out of our country and showed people [that] we could do something... even though we are a third world country we can excel in something.'

Gary Budram - public sector employee: `We should do the same thing in their communities as we did for `Sixhead's' community. Braithwaite is from Plaisance right? I don't even think there is a gym in Plaisance. And sports needs some more sponsorship and promotion. The ministry should do something with that. I felt very elated when I saw them win. I think Harris is one of the best fighters and it definitely makes me feel proud. We should all be proud. I think there should be a motorcade around Georgetown, they belong to the country now. There are a lot of things that should be done for them because they have really done this country a great honour.'

Ravi Dyal - salesclerk: `I feel they should give them a national holiday just as `Sixhead' had when he won. Something should be done and when you look at what he [`Sixhead'] got, they deserve something similar. It depends on their comfort, and what the government decides. I think they are good fighters and they could be better fighters in time. But I hope they select their opponents wisely and they don't jump to fight those big names that they are not ready for as yet. They still need to develop. As a Guyanese I feel glad for those guys and I know more will come. We have a lot of talented boxers.'

Carla Sutton - teacher-in-training: `First of all before Harris and Braithwaite even come they [the city council] need to clean up the city. I think they should be treated the same way as `Sixhead' was treated when he won the belt. And I think they should give them a holiday because they are world champions also. Just a holiday, it doesn't need to be every year, just for this year when they come in. Their winning means so much to Guyana we will be more recognised... this is our third title. We will be recognised in the world and it is them telling the world that Guyana has good athletes and really good talent. And this is true, even in most sports aside from boxing. Like basketball, we have so many good players, and table tennis and volleyball. We do have talented people in all these sports and I don't know the persons responsible for promoting them but I think they should work a little harder. We have people to take part but they are not encouraged. Nobody is there to motivate them. Braithwaite and Harris worked hard for it, even `Sixhead'. Anybody who wins a title in any sport works hard for it and even the losers have worked hard.'

Angela Sukraj - salesclerk: `I think they deserve a national award. They did something good for our country and I felt really happy when they both won because although Andrew `Sixhead' Lewis lost his world title we now have two. But apart from that I don't think they deserve a national holiday. He [Lewis] was our first world champion. But I think they each deserve a house, a car or something because they have done something good, which the country could be proud of.'

Sonia Yarde - actress: `They should give them houses and land... so that they could come back home to something. They deserve the same that they did for `Sixhead' Lewis. A lot of people lined up and he went all around the city. If you don't give them something to come home to, they won't come home. That is why I think so many of them go away to live in other countries, where they build their houses and invest their money. I am proud and happy to know that they won and they have made Guyana's name known to the world, they deserve something for that!'

Orin Jones - self-employed: `I think they should give them houses, cars and some reward that could make them comfortable because they have done a great lot towards the country. Other than `Sixhead', we have never had world champions. These guys have done their best and each and everyone of us here should remember them right throughout their lives. And I think they will do more, they showed more potential as world champions, especially Harris. He fought as a champion, he earned his belt. He was more convincing than `Sixhead'. So was Braithwaite. So they deserve more for that. Government should look into that because I know they will have their championships much longer. We have a lot of talented fighters here that have the potential of going far. Government should focus more on young athletes, hold training camps for them, give them the equipment so that they could develop because we could have many more world champions in the future.'

Saheb Abdool - salesman: `They need to be given their own houses, well furnished. They worked for that. They worked hard for that and they put their mind into it. And they deserve something for that. I felt nice when I heard that they had won, I felt proud as a Guyanese. These men worked hard and they should be rewarded for that, with at least some income or something.'

Gillian Wong - vendor: `I am glad for them [Braithwaite and Harris] and they should really set them nice. And they will always be champions and should always be respected for their accomplishments. They could build a gym or maybe a sports hall; we only have one sports hall now and remember that is all within the boxing arena. And the young people are looking at them because who could have told that both of them would have won? Nobody expected that. And we have more, plenty more, who are very talented and Braithwaite and Harris are an inspiration to them. The smallest youth is looking at what they did and think that they could follow in their footsteps, nothing in life is impossible.'

Dwayne Yaw - salesman: `I think they should do the same for these guys as they did for `Sixhead' because they are about to bring home two world titles. It would be a good idea for them to maybe do work in their community or something because they are great fighters, they deserved their wins and they deserve a lot for their achievements. I feel really great for them and I hope to be part of the motorcade.'
