President Bharrat Jagdeo has declared that the government is prepared to honour recently crowned WBC cruiserweight champion Wayne `Big Truck’ Braithwaite.

A release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) stated that President Jagdeo telephoned Braithwaite soon after the fight to congratulate him and was looking forward to his return home. “I hope to see him in Guyana soon to have discussions on what the government and country can do in a much more tangible way, not just by congratulations, because I intend to give him some tangible expression of appreciation. We are very happy he won,” GINA quoted president Jagdeo as saying.

Braithwaite won the title Friday night after a 10 round technical knockout of Italian Vincenzo Cantatore. Braithwaite is the second Guyanese fighting under the Golden Arrowhead to win a world title.

The first, Andrew `Sixhead’ Lewis was feted upon his return to Guyana and was presented with land and money to build a house as part of government’s gift package. Lewis was also allowed duty free concessions.
