A High Court judge yesterday ordered the release of city businessman Paul Fraser after the police could not provide reasons for holding him.

Fraser was detained on Wednesday following allegations that he had attempted to murder another man a week ago during a shooting incident at the Palm Court Bar and Restaurant.

Stabroek News understands that on Wednesday the police visited the home of Fraser's father looking for him. Fraser and his lawyer subsequently turned up at the Brickdam Police Station and the businessman was detained.

The lawyer yesterday filed habeas corpus proceedings in the High Court and Fraser was freed by 4 pm. No charge was laid against him.

After the October 2 shooting at the nightspot, two men - the Managing Director of Palm Court, Jad Rahaman and Chindanan Persaud called `Chillo' - had to be hospitalised.

The allegations were that during a confrontation, Persaud drew a gun and shot Rahaman in his chest. Persaud then reportedly fired two more shots prompting a licensed firearm holder to shoot him. (Kim Lucas)
