Some 23 postal workers, including postmasters and clerks, with responsibility for processing pension payments at identified post offices, have been interdicted from duty for the duration of a police-led probe into alleged fraudulent payouts.

The Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC), making this disclosure yesterday in a release, also confirmed the discovery of a large number of valid and counterfeit old age pension vouchers, a portion of which had been cashed at 15 post offices across the country.

The police CID investigation, the release further said, was warranted following a search of the residence in New Amsterdam, Berbice of a former postmaster on September 11 during which valid and counterfeit old age pension vouchers were found.

The police probe is being assisted by senior managers of the GPOC, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, and the Auditor General's Office.

Human Services Minister, Bibi Shadick recently said that the investigation into scam had been intensified. According to a Government Information Agency release, the irregularities were discovered sometime ago when it was learnt that some pensioners were not receiving their payments while other names on the list were either fictitious or were the names of deceased persons.
