Guyana scored victory in the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Body-building Championships held in Caracas, Venezuela last weekend when Slyvon Gardner of Power Plant Gym won the Bantamweight title. Paul Nichols of the same gym placed 2nd in the Lightweight category, while Anthony Thom of Interline Fitness Gym placed 6th. It was the first time in almost 30 years that Guyana has won the Bantamweight title.

It was sweet victory for Guyana as Slyvon Gardner, although being the lightest contestant in the entire championships, clearly demonstrated superior muscularity and symmetry to emerge head of the field and bring home the gold for Guyana. Paul Nichols placed second, in a very tough category dominated by the Latin American Body-builders, to Rafael Pimentel from Guatemala. He was in superb shape and placed an honourable second to a veteran lightweight contender.

A grand appreciation ceremony is being planned for next Wednesday in honour of Guyana’s outstanding performances in what was clearly Guyana’s best CAC expedition in 30 years.
