The Guyana Defence Force's Military Police Department will assist the Guyana Police Force and two private security firms in providing security throughout the four-day trade fair, GUYEXPO 2002.

This is according to a release from the army on Thursday, which said that from Thursday afternoon when the fair opened its members would be deployed on a daily basis at the Sophia Exhibition Complex with the aim of maintaining a safe environment for the exhibitors and visitors.

The release said that with the increased security at the complex Guyanese and foreign visitors could be assured of their safety.

On Thursday, two truckloads of armed military police were on site when the trade fair opened as well as numerous police officers and other security guards.

The stepped up security comes in the wake of several attacks by armed gunmen in the city in which a number of people have been killed.
