Plans are underway for the staging of a Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Regional quiz, aimed at promoting the CFU’s Qualification for the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2003 and Educating the Region with respect to Caribbean and World Football.

The champion team will receive US$10,000, while the second place team will earn US$3000. The third and fourth place teams will receive US$2000 and US$1000 respectively.

According to a Guyana Football Federation (GFF) release, local secondary school students will have an opportunity to test their wits at Caribbean and World football history as well as Caribbean history.

The GFF in conjunction with the Ministry of Education will conduct a quiz for all interested secondary schools in two subject areas; football (Caribbean and World) and Caribbean History.

For the local competition which must be concluded by October 9, sixteen teams (two persons each) shall appear as determined by the GFF, to arrive at the champion.

The Guyana champion team is down to meet St. Maarten on October 23 at a venue to be determined, and the winner will contest the Caribbean final scheduled for Trinidad on November 6.

Teams will be made up of form students.

The quiz shall be conducted in two phases; a preliminary phase conducted by the GFF and a final phase conducted by the CFU.

In the preliminary phase, teams must get the approval of the principal of their school.

One member of the team will be required to write an essay of 250-500 words on “Caribbean Football in the 21st Century”.

Based on the essay which must be attached to each application form, 16 teams shall be selected to compete in the next round.

The quiz’s subject areas are; (Football Caribbean and World) competitions and their history, famous football personalities and facilities, the Goal project, organisation, winners of CFU, CONCACAF and FIFA competitions and football terms and laws of the game.

(Caribbean History) The indigenous people, the Europeans, Caribbean economy, resistance and revolt, movement towards emancipation and adjustments to emancipation 1838-1876.

Application forms which must be approved by the school’s principal, must reach GFF’s general secretary by October 4.
