Guyana stumble to massive defeat

Defending West Indies women’s limited overs cricket champions St. Lucia, opened their title defence in this year’s competition with a crushing 162-run victory over Guyana at the GCC ground, Bourda, yesterday.
After St. Lucia scored a mammoth 248-6 from 50 overs, Guyana lost wickets in quick succession until 15-year old Berbician Annabelle Lewis (22) came together with Tracey Glasgow (16) at 34-4. The two put together 31 runs for the fifth wicket, before Glasgow lost her wicket with the score at 65. Lewis was left not out on 22.
With the fall of Glasgow’s wicket, via the run out route, the locals once again found themselves losing wickets in every over thereafter and their innings folded at 86 off 18 overs.
Lewis’ 22 included two boundaries. She faced 80 deliveries and was at the wicket for 41 minutes.
St. Lucia’s captain Vevena Felicien led the way with the bat, stroking 49 runs from 93 deliveries. She also picked up 1-2 from a single over with the ball.
Pamela Alfred (38) Roselyn Emmanuel (36), Eugena Gregg (29) and Glenicia James (28) were the other main contributors to St. Lucia’s total. There were however 60 extras, compliments of the local ladies. Wides contributed 48, and no balls seven.
When they started their reply, Guyana’s Faye Franklyn was first to return to the pavilion, after attempting to come forward to the second legitimate delivery of the first over of the innings, bowled by Gregg and having her stumps rocked back. Gregg had previously bowled three wides.
Onika Wallerson, the other opener, was joined at the wicket by Indonatie Goordial who faced four balls before having her middle stumps rocked back by Philippa Thomas with the next delivery.
Candace Adkins joined Wallerson but had to retire hurt after being struck with a ball in her mid section. It took quite some time before medical assistance in the form of a pain spray could reach her.
The overweight person taking the spray to Adkins, reached the injured athlete after the spray was applied by a St. Lucian player who had ran up to the individual with the spray and ran back to Adkins and applied the spray.
When Adkins returned to the wicket and joined Lewis with the score at 72-7, she failed to come of the mark, being adjudged LBW to Pamela Alfred.
Wallerson, after spending 12 minutes at the wicket, was bowled by Gregg, trying to play back to the first delivery of the third over.
Bowling for St. Lucia, Alfred grabbed 3-13 from three overs, while Gregg captured 2-31 and Philippa Thomas 2-23 from five overs each. For Guyana, off-spinner Lewis was the pick of the bowlers with 4-33 from 8.3 overs, while Inga Henry picked up 1-25 from three overs.
