The Ministry of Human Services & Social Security has released money for the payment of old age pensions and the money is available countrywide at any post office, a release from the Government Information Agency (GINA) says.

GINA stated that the pensioners started to receive their monies on August 5, but earlier reports had indicated that a number of the elderly who had turned up at post offices had been turned down, or their vouchers for payment rejected.

GINA quoted Minister of Human Services & Social Security, Bibi Shadick as saying that "things are back to normal and are going smoothly."

According to the release, disbursements through cash payments at post offices and other mechanisms are continuous but following the decision to upgrade the system of old age pension, measures have been put in place to ensure that there are no discrepancies and that the elderly receive their money.

The release further said that the distribution of new pension books began in January this year and is one of the areas the ministry is focusing on in its efforts to improve the overall network of services it offers to Guyanese. The distribution of the books, the release said, came in the wake of reports that pensioners were not receiving their money and this had sparked intensive investigations.
