The tourism industry received a boost this year with the increase of arrivals during the summer holidays and this trend is expected to continue into September, Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon reported yesterday.

In July, the number of visitors rose by over 1,500 compared with the same period in 2001.

According to the figures released by Luncheon, there were 13,912 arrivals in July 2002, compared to 12,300 for July last year.

Although he gave no figures, the Cabinet Secretary said there was a significant increase in visitors for the first seven months in 2002 over the corresponding period last year.

Luncheon noted that this was a period of school reunions at institutions like Tutorial High School, Bishops High School, Berbice High School and others, and there was also the nurse’s association reunion.

He said that the expectation is that there would be a further influx of visitors when GuyExpo 2002 is held next month.
