Guyana teams blaze through to semis

Guyana’s boys and girls squash teams made it through to the semi-final round of the Junior Caribbean Squash Championships which ended yesterday evening at the Liguanea Club, Kingston, Jamaica.

However, up to press time, no semi-final results were available.

but according to reports from Jamaica, Guyana’s male and female teams ended at the top of the points standing in their respective Pools, going into the semi-final round yesterday.

The other semi-finalists were; (boys) Jamaica, Venezuela and Barbados. (girls) Jamaica, Barbados and Trinidad.

The local girls were down to play Trinidad in the semi-final round yesterday, while the boys were listed to face Jamaica.

After disposing of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (5-0) and the Cayman Islands (4-1) in the opening round of the team competition on Wednesday, the local girls team came back on Thursday and made light work of hosts Jamaica, winning the match by a 4-1 margin and ending at the top of Pool `B’.

The boys on the other hand recorded a 3-2 win over Bermuda on Wednesday and returned on Thursday to thrash Bahamas and Venezuela by 5-0 margins. The 5-0 win against Venezuela included three walk-overs. They too topped the points standing in the boys Pool `B’ competition.

In the girls Pool `B’ match against Jamaica, the locals lost their under-17 match 0-9, 2-9, 4-9, but won their under-13 encounter 5/9, 9/7, 9/5, 9/6. In the under-15 fixture, Guyana won 9-6, 9-3, 9-1, while in their two under-19 match-ups, they won 9/3, 9/7, 9/2 and 9/2, 9/0, 9/1.

On Thursday morning, Guyana boys team secured walk overs in the under-13, under-17 and one of the two under-19 fixtures against Venezuela. In their under-15 match, they won 5/9, 9/1, 6/9, 9/2, 9/3, while in their other under-19 fixture, the locals won 9/6, 4/9, 4/9, 10/9, 9/1.

The boys team returned on Thursday afternoon and made a clean sweep of all five of their matches, winning the under-13 fixture 9/1, 9/1, 9/1, the under-15 9-2, 9/4, 9/3, the under-17 9-0, 9-1, 9-0 and their two under-19 encounters 9/0, 9/0, 9/0 and 9/2, 9/4, 9/0.

Results from other matches played on Thursday are as follows; (Boys Pool `A’); Barbados beat Trinidad and Tobago 5-0, Jamaica defeated Cayman Islands 4-1, but Cayman Islands stormed back and edged OECS 3-2, Barbados beat OECS 5-0 and Jamaica edged Trinidad 3-2. (Boys Pool `B’); Bermuda beat Bahamas 3-2, but lost to Venezuela by a similar margin.

In the girls competition, (Pool `A’) Barbados beat Bahamas 5-0, but all five victories were walk overs, Trinidad defeated Bermuda 4-1, Barbados trashed Bermuda 5-0 and Trinidad put away Bahamas 5-0 also. (Pool `B’); Cayman Islands got past the OECS by a 4-1 margin.
