The Office of the President feels that the initiatives of civil society
following their meetings with President Bharrat Jagdeo on Tuesday present
the most ideal opportunity so far to bring an end to the political
impasse.
The President met with the Guyana Council of Churches (GCC) and a
contingent comprising representatives of the Private Sector Commission (PSC),
the Guyana Bar Association (GBA), and the Guyana Trades Union Congress (TUC)
separately.
Cabinet secretary, Dr Roger Luncheon, told reporters on Wednesday that the
GCC leaders were emphatic in their search for a resolution to the
political conflict and a resumption of the dialogue process between
President Bharrat Jagdeo and PNC/R Leader Desmond Hoyte. The talks were
suspended by the PNC/R because it was unhappy with the way decisions taken
were being implemented.
Luncheon said the President and the GCC representatives examined the
issues underpinning the impasse and possible solutions.
He said the discussions with the other delegation were conducted in the
context of the constitutional provision for shared governance.
Luncheon stated that the Office of the President felt the initiatives of
both delegations were appreciated and represented sound ideas on the way
forward.
Representatives of the GBA, the PSC and the TUC also met Hoyte on
Wednesday.
