Today, the Mothers in Black (MIB) group will be holding a 'Drive with Care' campaign in and around Georgetown to mark its second anniversary, a release from the group stated.

The activity, which has been designated 'Black Friday', will be held between 3 pm and 5 pm and it is expected to attract at least 30 vehicles.

Three groups of members and supporters will drive at the legal speed, 30 mph/48 kph, along several routes: Houston to Providence and back to Houston; Houston to Seawall, Sheriff Street and back to Houston and Plaisance to Le Meridien Pegasus and back to Plaisance.

The MIB is hoping that the public will support the activity, and urges that persons actively show intolerance of the continued carnage on the roadways.

The MIB was formed on July 7, 2000, following two crashes on the Linden Highway which resulted in several deaths, mostly of children. The body which is made up primarily of mothers, other relatives and friends of fatal accident victims has since been holding weekly Friday midday vigils opposite Parliament Buildings in an effort to jolt politicians, law enforcers and the public to take immediate action to make the roadways safer.

However, the release noted, after meetings with President Bharrat Jagdeo, Minister of Home Affairs Ronald Gajraj, and the police, MIB has seen little or no change in traffic systems and law enforcement, while the number of road deaths escalates.

Although seat belt legislation was passed in April, no indication of when the law will be enforced has been given, the release pointed out.
