Guyanese Asha Pieters was crowned Miss West Indies in St Lucia on Sunday night, beating 12 other Caribbean delegates, who were competing for the crown.

Pieters, 19, is the reigning Miss Guyana Talented Teen and had also copped the fourth runner-up position in the recently held Miss Guyana Universe. She was also adjudged the contestant with the best talent piece in St Lucia, where she performed the dramatic piece `I am a Guyanese’.

Pamela Dillon, who is at the helm of Simpli Royal, which has been instrumental in Pieters’ development in the fashion world as it is that organisation that hosts the Miss Guyana Talented Teen pageant, said yesterday that Pieters called her and informed her that she was "bringing home the crown."

Among other assorted gifts, Pieters has won for herself US$3,000 and reportedly did a photograph shoot for the US Black Women magazine.

The Miss West Indies Pageant had several segments: introduction, national wear, swim wear, sophisticated wear, talent piece and evening wear.

Dillon said it was not clear what duties Pieters would have as Miss West Indies, but said would be handing over her Miss Talented Teen crown on July 27.

The young beauty is said to be actively involved in the organising of mini shows, the most recent being the Miss St John’s College fashion show, as she continues pursuing her secondary education.

"Asha is a true representation of class, beauty and brains, which will no doubt be displayed through out her presentation," were the confident words contained in a press release from Simpli Royal prior to Pieters’ departure.

The new queen returns home today.
