Arms and ammunition found: three detained

Three men are now in Police custody after they were apprehended on Wednesday night by a Guyana Defence Force Patrol in the Good Hope Housing Scheme area, East Coast Demerara.

According to a press release from the Joint Services Coordinating Committee the three men, Shaheed Khan 30, of Rotunda Place, D,Aguiar Park, Haroon Yahya 29, of lot 80 Good Hope; and Sean Belfield of Good Hope Housing Scheme were observed moving in a suspicious looking vehicle GHH 7539 about 22:45 hrs and were stopped and questioned.

The release said that based on answers given, the vehicle was searched and a quantity of arms, ammunition and other items were found. The release said the men suspected to be involved in nefarious criminal activities were subsequently handed over to the Police along with the vehicle and the items found.

Subsequent to the arrests, the Police have conducted a series of searches at houses in and around Georgetown and a number of persons that have been detained are assisting the police in their investigations.

Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent, David Ramnarine told the Chronicle that the several searches carried out in the city yesterday was part of an exercise by the Joint Services in search of wanted persons and arms and ammunition.

Ramnarine said the searches, which were conducted in the Campbellville area and South Georgetown, were based on information supplied by the public on suspicious criminal activities.
