PLANS are currently being finalised for marking next week Monday as 'Day of Atonement and Reconciliation for the Healing of the Nation' which, the sponsoring religious organisations said, will take the form of a human link.

The chain will spawn the Georgetown headquarters of the two main political parties, People's Progressive Party (Freedom House) in Robb Street and People's National Congress (PNC) (Congress Place) at Sophia.

Followers of the Christian, Muslim, Hindu and Baha’i religions, concerned over the disturbing crime situation, have chosen December 9 for the observance under the umbrella of ‘Inter-Religious Organisation’ (IRO).

Other churches and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are lending support.

Second Vice-President of Guyana Council of Churches (GCC), Roman Catholic Deacon Mike James said the organisers will have another planning meeting today at the Muslim Youth Organisation (MYO) building, Woolford Avenue, also in the city.

He said the simplest route has been identified for linking Freedom House and Congress Place, through Garnett Street, Vlissengen Road/Irving Street, Church Street and Wellington Streets.

James said the activity will start at 10:00 hours and, at 12 noon, there will be a special prayer by the participants, to be followed by the joint singing of the National Anthem.

He said the religious faiths should work more closely together to send a stronger signal to politicians and political leaders of this country for them to resolve their differences and work towards the betterment of Guyana and Guyanese.

According to James, everybody in Guyana needs to do much more to forge national unity.

"We feel that, in the past, perhaps, we have not worked as closely together as we should - all the different religious faiths - and this gives us an opportunity to sort of rectify that shortcoming and forge unity among Christians, Muslims, Hindus and Baha’is, so that we can work together and offer one voice as we play our part in this whole effort at seeking national unity and consensus," he told the Chronicle in an invited comment yesterday.

"I think, in the past, we (the religious organisations) have not lived up to our obligations of fostering unity (and) I am not sure that the political parties are willing to admit their own failings either," James declared.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ray Thakurdyal, who will chair the human link event, said there will be a vigil during the actual linking and a statement from IRO would be read by all participants.

Objectives of the December 9 exercise are:

· to bring together people of various persuasions to speak with one voice

and pray with one heart for the situation in Guyana;

· to strengthen and awaken the traditional sense of the Guyanese community in which we are our sisters' and brothers' keepers;

· to encourage Guyanese to embrace the richness of our ethnic and cultural diversity and eschew, in ourselves and others, speech and action that would threaten our common good and

· to remind all our political leaders of our expectations and confidence in them to lead us in a manner that would translate our National Motto into reality.

The sponsors are inviting and encouraging Guyanese of all religions and other members of the general public to be part of the human chain.
