MINISTER of Sport, Gail Teixeira, honoured the coaches of the country’s latest world boxing champions yesterday.

In a simple ceremony at the minister’s Main Street office, Minister Teixeira presented a trophy to Colin Morgan, under whose tutelage Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite won Guyana’s second world title.

With Morgan in his corner, Braithwaite scored a tenth round technical knockout over Italian Vincenzo Cantatore for the World Boxing Council Cruiserweight belt.

The minister also had trophies for Lennox Blackmore and Maurice ‘Bizzy’ Boyce. They were presented to Seon Bristol for the trainers. Bristol is the public relations person for Braithwaite’s camp and was instrumental in coordinating the joint return home for the two boxers to celebrate their victories with Guyanese.

Blackmore was in ‘Vicious’ Vivian Harris’s corner when the boxer claimed the country’s third world title with a second round knockout over Diobelys Hurtado for the World Boxing Association Super Lightweight belt. Boyce was in Braithwaite’s corner.

The minister’s gesture fits into the general concept that behind every successful boxer, there are trainers, managers, and other persons associated with their achievement.

Harris and the trainers returned to their base in USA on an afternoon flight.

Braithwaite will be here for another two weeks and the sport ministry will be arranging for the world champion to tour Berbice, Lethem and Essequibo, some time next week. (Isaiah Chappelle)
