The boxers paid a courtesy call on President Jagdeo at the Office of the President, Georgetown, shortly after arriving in Guyana yesterday morning.

Earlier, the President had expressed his pleasure at the duo’s wins and had stated that he will meet both champions to discuss what Government can do for the fighters to show the country’s appreciation.

“I am very happy. That was a good thing last night. We won another world title. I am so happy for the country. I think it is so great for morale and for the people. He is an excellent fighter. He surprised us a bit by ending it so early because we know Hurtado is a very good fighter but that just shows his preparation and skills. He is a very good boxer,” the President had commended Harris.

“When he comes home we will discuss what we are going to do,” he had said.

Commenting on ‘Big Truck’s’ win the following day, the Head of State said, “I hope I see him in Guyana soon to have discussions on what the country can do in a much more tangible way, not just by congratulations, because I intend to also give him some tangible expression of appreciation.”

Yesterday’s meeting was in keeping with these commitments.

Accompanying the boxers were their trainers, Braithwaite’s mother, and Harris’ father and brother. The boxers arrived at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri about 7:30 hours yesterday to a warm Guyanese welcome. They were greeted along the East Bank Public Road by schoolchildren and their teachers.

Living up to their names as Champions, the men braved the intermittent weather and despite the rain remained in the ‘open-back’ vehicle all the way to the Capital. Their first stop in Georgetown was at City Hall, where they attended a civic reception hosted by Mayor Hamilton Green and City Councillors.

The new World Boxing Association (WBA) Super-lightweight Champion Vivian Harris has done his country proud by copping the second world title for Guyana in eight days. Harris scored this win in the second round of the match when he came against former holder of the title Diobelys Hurtado on the night of October 19 in Texas.

Wayne Braithwaite won the World Boxing Council (WBC) cruiserweight title against Italian Vincenzo Cantatorte in the tenth round of the match on October 11 last. (Government Information Agency - GINA)
