MINISTER of Sport Gail Teixeira yesterday issued official messages of congratulation to Guyana’s two boxing world champions, Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite and Vivian Harris. On October 11, Braithwaite stopped Italy’s Vincenzo Cantatore in the 10th round to win the vacant WBC cruiserweight title.

Harris stopped Diobleys Hurtado within two rounds in Houston, Texas, last Saturday night to win the World Boxing Association Super-Lightweight (Junior-Welterweight) belt.

That achievement came just eight days after Braithwaite’s feat.

The text of the message to Braithwaite reads:

“I wish to offer on my behalf and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, and on my own behalf warmest congratulations on your fine victory at the Jolic Auditorium, Italy , on Saturday October 11.

Through determination, commitment and hard work you have won fame and glory for Guyana and at the same time given to your countrymen their second world boxing title for which we can all be justifiably proud.

Of even wider significance is the fact that in but one week two of Guyana’s sons have captured world boxing titles and this historic and outstanding achievement should for all times be recorded in the annals of this country.

“I do wish you every success in your quest for future victories and look forward to meeting you when you return home soon..”,

The text of the message to Harris reads:

“On behalf of the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport, and on my own behalf, I am indeed pleased to extend heartiest congratulations on your splendid victory at the Reliant Park, Houston, Texas, on Saturday October 19 last.

“By dint of hard work, commitment and discipline you have brought honour and glory to your home land and a proud Guyana heralds your remarkable success.

“Of a most significant and historic achievement, however, is the fact that two of Guyana’s sons have captured world titles in a matter of days and this outstanding accomplishment should forever be preserved in the annals of this country.

“I sincerely wish you every success in your future endeavours and look forward to meeting you when you return home.”
