A FOURTH joint meeting of the Guyana-Suriname Border Commissions opens today in Paramaribo, Suriname, the Foreign Ministry here has announced.

Guyana's delegation for the meeting, due to end tomorrow, is headed by Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mr. Doodnauth Singh, who is also Chairperson of the National Border Commission.

He is accompanied by Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Elisabeth Harper; Programme Manager, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Rudy Collins; Advisor, Dr Barton Scotland; Manager of the Petroleum Division of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, Mr. Newell Dennison; Senior Legal Adviser, Ms Rosemarie Cadogan and Head of the Frontiers Division, Mr. Keith George, both of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ms. Damone Younge, State Counsel in the Attorney General's Chambers.

Guyana and Suriname are working on advancing cooperation in the areas of mining, joint ventures between the private sectors of both countries, trade promotion, health (especially in the areas of HIV/AIDS), culture and education.

The meeting starting today was initially planned for earlier this year but was rescheduled at the request of Suriname.

It follows a series of engagements between Guyana and Suriname for this year, including a State visit by President Bharrat Jagdeo to Suriname earlier this year and the convening of the Sixth Session of the Guyana Suriname Cooperation Council in January.

The mechanism of the joint meetings between the National Border Commissions of the two countries was established in 1995 to facilitate a joint approach towards addressing the range of issues relating to the boundary dispute between them, the ministry said.
