THE Prosecution closed yesterday at the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the joint treason charge against political activists Mark Benschop and Philip Bynoe.

Special Prosecutor Sanjeev Datadin said he was doing so because of the absence of the last four witnesses who were summoned but were either ill or unable to attend Court.

Datadin had told Magistrate Chandra Sohan he intended to call 17 witnesses but eventually produced only 13.

Those absent were named as Assistant Superindent David Ramnarine, Police Public Relations Officer, who was unavailable because of a special assignment; Sergeant Compton Lewis who suffered injuries on July 3; sick Lance Corporal Simone Gibson and Naresh Singh, out of the Demerara Magisterial District for personal reasons.

Lead Counsel for the Defence, Mr Basil Williams, who expressed the view that Datadin could have concluded his presentation after the second witness testified, said he is happy it has ended.

Williams said the Defence would need a few days to review the evidence and examine the law and Magistrate Sohan said he would begin hearing the submissions Monday.

Meanwhile, Mr Mortimer Coddette, who is also on the Defence team, complained that ranks of the Police Tactical Services Unit (TSU), who usually escort the remanded prisoner to Court, continue to abuse Benschop and he is fearful.

Coddette said Mr Anil Nandalall, who is associated with Datadin, promised to have the allegation investigated but Nandalall said he has not yet received a report of the findings.
