Cabinet approves appointment of new Council on the Prerogative of Mercy

HEAD of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr. Roger Luncheon yesterday indicated that Cabinet at its weekly meeting Tuesday had approved the appointment of the new Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

This body is statutorily appointed to provide advice to the President on the implementation of capital punishment -- in the case Guyana - the hanging of convicted murderers.

According to Luncheon, the new Council on the Prerogative of Mercy would be headed by Minister within the Ministry of Local Government, Mr. Clinton Collymore and would statutorily include the Attorney General, Mr. Doodnauth Singh; Dr. Biro Harry; Major Ann Clement of the Guyana Defence Force; Mr. Ragunandan Singh, Mr. Ramcharran Harrypaul; Mr. Selwyn Ford; Ms. Edith Best and Ms. Cheryl Rodrigues.

He said, too, that the Council would take office from the current date and be in existence for a period of three years.
