MOST business operators in Linden heeded the shutdown call yesterday.

While some opened for business earlier in the day, they later closed.

Traffic was also lighter than usual at the parks in the town.

Schools in Linden closed for what an education official explained was a pre-planned Teachers Day Rally, which culminated at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.

When the Chronicle made checks early yesterday morning there were a few business places open on both sides of the Demerara River, which separates Linden into two main sections.

However, by yesterday afternoon, most business places were closed while a handful remained open.

There were also some hire car and taxi drivers on duty on both banks, along with some mini-bus drivers who work around the town and those who ply the Linden/Georgetown route.

The river boat operators also did report for duty as did Government workers, including those at the Regional Democratic Council Administration of Region 10 (Upper Demerara/Berbice), Inland Revenue,

National Insurance Scheme, the commercial banks - Guyana Cooperative Bank, National Bank of Industry and Commerce and New Building Society.

The New Mackenzie Market Extension does not open all day on
Wednesdays and the closure after lunch was normal.

Still, there were some stallholders in the Mackenzie Market who did transact business while others decided to close.
