A SEEMINGLY over-confident and complacent Guyana’s women’s team gave an indifferent performance to go down to Grenada by 110 runs in their West Indies Women’s Federation round-robin fifth round encounter, played at the Blairmont Estate Ground on Sunday.

The Guyanese, who entered the game with three consecutive wins after losing their opening match to defending champions St Lucia, failed to get into their strides as Grenada, who were twice dismissed below a hundred in previous matches, compiled a match-winning 231 for four in their allotted 50 overs after winning the toss.

A shell-shocked Guyana team were then brought down to earth as they crumbled for 121 in the face of controlled bowling from the Grenadians.

Guyana’s downfall started with the demise of top batter Indomatie Goordial (five) who failed to beat a throw from square leg.

Goordial’s opening partner, Faye Franklyn (14), who looked well set, then offered substitute Hilary Pascal catching practice at short mid-off as Guyana slipped to 48 for two in the 13th over.

Candace Adkins and Tracey Glasgow attempted to rebuild the innings but a terrible mix-up between the two saw the former becoming the locals’ second run-out victim for a well-played 15.

All-rounder Anabelle Lewis (three), who never looked the same player as in the four previous matches when she was unbeaten in all her innings, was undone by a superb one-handed return catch by Carolyn Alexander at 69 for four.

Thereafter, the resistance was feeble as only Darlene Gale with a joint top score of 15 (one four off 30 balls) and skipper Abena Parker (11 with a four off 20 balls), reached double figures.

Parker skied Marilyn Nelson to her opposite number Lewis in the covers while Gale had her stumps uprooted by Lydia Edgar, who did the same to wicketkeeper Tracey Miller.

Edgar was returning for her second over after being pulled out of the attack after sending down seven wides in the second over of the Guyana innings.

Two more run-outs did little to help Guyana’s cause, the victims being Inga Henry (0) and Natasha Gangoo (0).

The innings consisted of 51 extras, 48 being wides.

Edgar took two for 13 from 2.2 overs while Nelson had two for 25 from 10.

Earlier, openers Marilyn Nelson and Ann Rose Lewis had given the Grenadians a rousing start of 94 in 26.2 overs as the Guyanese bowlers strove to get a breakthrough in the face of some sloppy fielding.

The breakthrough eventually came when the burly Lewis was bowled by fast bowler Michelle Fitzalbert’s second spell. Her 31 included two fours in 82 minutes off 87 balls.

Nelson and number three batter Susan Redhead continued to flay the Guyana attack, adding a further 53 for the second wicket before Nelson, who hit a fine 49, was smartly stumped by wicketkeeper Miller off off-spinner Anabelle Lewis. Her innings contained two fours off 105 balls in 121 minutes.

Alexnder (two) failed to get among the runs but there was no respite for the Guyanese as skipper Lewis joined forces with Redhead to add an entertaining 28 for the fourth wicket before the latter went via run-out for an attractive 75, laced with four fours off 59 balls in 71 minutes.

Lewis, who was unbeaten on 27, and Edgar then joined forces to add an unbeaten 39 for the fifth wicket when the 50 overs expired. Lewis’ knock included a four off 31 balls while Edgar was on 14 not out.

Guyana will clash with Trinidad and Tobago at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary today in their final match of the round-robin tournament while the Trinidadians still have another game against Grenada at the Everest Cricket Club ground, tomorrow. Grenada play Jamaica at Bourda today. Yesterday was a rest day.
