New PNC/R Central Executive elected

THE main Opposition People's National Congress Reform (PNC/R) has a new Central Executive to join the three key functionaries named Sunday night at the end of party's 13th Biennial Congress.

They are Mr. Basil Williams, Ms. Debbie Backer, Mr. Aubrey Norton, Dr. Faith Harding, Mr. Deryck Bernard, Mr. James McAllister, Mr. Ivor Allen, Mr. Oscar Clarke, Mr. R. T. Ricknauth, Ms. Amna Ally, Mr. Allan Munroe, Dr. Dalgeish Joseph, Mr. Lance Carberry and Ms. Volda Lawrence.

Counting of ballots to come up with the list of members of the PNC/R's Central Executive continued late into Sunday night and delegates left without knowing the final results.

The results made known on Sunday night were the return of Mr. Desmond Hoyte as party Leader with an overwhelming majority. He secured 508 votes against 33 secured by his lone opponent Ms. Germaine Vansluytman.

Chairman is Mr. Robert Corbin, returned with 352 votes compared to 233 by the other contender, Mr. Raphael Trotman.

Alexander has been returned as Vice Chairman, securing 341 votes while Trotman, who contested the post, got 179 votes.

Meanwhile, the following are the results of the elections of the National Congress of Women (the women's movement of the PNC/R):

** Chairman - Ms. Cheryl Sampson (returned)

** First Vice Chairman - Ms. Doreen Duncan

** Second Vice Chairman- Ms. Florence Bourne

** National Treasurer - Ms. Linda Gomes-Haley

** Asst. National Treasurer - Mrs. Patricia Woolford

** Asst. National Secretary - Ms. Genevieve Allen

In the elections for the Guyana Youth and Student Movement, Ms Lurlene Nestor was elected as National Chairman.

She is the first female ever to have been elected to that post, the PNC/R said. (SHIRLEY THOMAS)
