GEORGETOWN, Guyana, (CMC) - Guyana's heartbroken senior footballers returned home Monday, after a penalty, shoot-out elimination from the Caribbean Zone Gold Cup qualifying series.

The Guyanese travelled to Willemstad, Curacao, this past weekend, with a 2-1 advantage over the Netherlands Antilles from the first leg, but lost it in a 1-0 defeat in the return game and exited the series in a 3-2 penalty, shoot-out loss at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium.

The Netherlands Antilles are now through to the Caribbean Zone finals in Trinidad and Tobago in November.

After goals by Carl Cole and Dean Forbes had given Guyana a 2-1 win at home last month, substitute Anthony Martis pulled the two sides level with his goal for Netherlands Antilles just before the halftime break.

Guyana were down to 10 men after 35 minutes when Cole was sent off by referee Harlem Polo of Aruba. Polo also ejected the Dutch side's Tayron Mongen in the 74th minute for a second bookable offence.

The aggregate 2-2 score meant penalties would decide the tie, and Shargene Forbuis, Criston Brunkard and Marc Muzo found the back of the net for the home side, while Marlon Hendricks and Gregory Richardson were on target for Guyana.

The Netherlands Antilles now advance to Group D in the Caribbean Zone finals in Trinidad and Tobago from November 13-24 where they will join Haiti, Antigua and Barbuda and the winner of the Aruba/Suriname series.
