THE Guyana senior football team returned home yesterday after their one-week preparatory visit to the Twin-island Republic, ready to take on the Netherlands Antilles in Sunday’s first leg of their CONCACAF Gold Cup preliminaries.

Reports coming out of the camp indicate that even though the Trinidad tour was unsuccessful on the field, a few positives did come out of it.

The Guyanese lost all three matches on tour, going down 3-2 to San Juan Jabloteh; 2-1 to WC Connection and 1-0 to Police.

San Juan Jabloteh and WC Connection are two of the stronger clubs in the Trinidad professional league and boast numerous overseas players, including some from Brazil.

From all reports the Guyanese wasted quite a few opportunities against Police and could easily have won that game, had they converted their chances.

The other games saw Randolph Jerome and Matthew ‘the Assassin’ Pollard scoring, against San Juan Jabloteh while Dillon ‘Satan’ Glen found the nets against WC Connection.

The Guyanese, who were yesterday housed at the YWCA in Brickdam, were to be transferred to the New Building Society Hall of Residence at the University of Guyana for the remainder of their encampment.

According to an official of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), this would put them into close proximity to the University ground, facilitating training sessions.

The Netherlands Antilles team, due here tomorrow, would also be housed at the University Campus, but at the Dennis Irvine Hall of Residence.

The teams will be battling for one of four places in Group D of the Caribbean Zone with two places already taken by Haiti and Antigua. Battling for the other remaining spot are Aruba and Suriname.

The four groups, each consisting of four teams, then gather in Trinidad and Tobago November 10-15 with the winners going on to represent the Caribbean at the next stage of the Gold Cup.

Guyana’s chances of advancing have been strengthened by the inclusion of English-born Dean Forbes. The six-footer, who has Guyanese parentage, is a defensive midfielder and joined the squad last weekend. He is expected to turn out for Guyana on Sunday. (Donovan Matthews)
