MARIA Benschop yesterday moved to the High Court seeking the release of her husband, Mark Benschop, from Police custody.

Attorney-at-law Mr. Basil Williams made the habeas corpus application before Justice Yonette Cummings-Edwards, who issued an order directing the Commissioner of Police to appear in front of Justice Claudette La Bennett on Monday.

The Commissioner has to show cause why the subject should not be produced in Court immediately a writ is granted.

Benschop, for whom an arrest warrant was issued on Tuesday in connection with his alleged involvement with the July 3 events, including the storming of the Office of the President, remained in detention up to late yesterday. He secured bail on related charges in a Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Target Special Squad (TSS) Police apprehended Benschop and took him to Force Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown, Thursday, after his appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Juliet Holder-Allen and her grant of his pre-trial liberty on a $35,000 recognisance.
