THE highly-publicised expired supplements in the Senior National football camp were taken away by Dr Joseph Haynes who had offered them as a kind gesture.

Dr Haynes yesterday told Chronicle Sport, that he was simply trying to help the footballers and could not understand the actions of the players.

“There was no ill intention on my part,” Dr Haynes declared.

The doctor explained that he examined some 20 footballers and they mentioned that they were getting cramps in training, felt tired and had no energy.

Dr Haynes then showed them dietary supplements that had the required nutrients to help correct the situation, but they were expired. He told them they were still good because supplements were not drugs, even informing them that he used the supplements.

“It’s Brewer’s Yeast. It’s no drugs. They were just as they came from the company. They were all I had and I told them they could take them if they wanted, until I made a report to the GFF (Guyana Football Federation) to get them supplies. They didn’t have to take it. It was not that anything was hidden,” Dr Haynes disclosed.

The doctor pointed out that no money was passed for the examination or the supplements.

“In fact, what I did for football, I did it free of cost and that may stop now, if this is the thanks I am getting,” Dr Haynes said.

Dr Haynes disclosed that he even explained to the coaches that the players were expelling amino acids every day in training and when the day came for them to play, they would not have the energy.

The doctor also disclosed that the GFF should have a diet on file that he had prepared for players in training, but apparently whoever was preparing the meals was not following it.

Dr Haynes said he did not read the article published by another media house, but after he heard about it, he went and took away the supplements, but he could not find the particular bottle in contention.

On his visit to the camp to retrieve the supplements, the doctor said he spoke to the players and Collie Hercules told him that the players had nothing to do with the article.

At the practice match at Uitvlugt ground, Wednesday, Chronicle Sport spoke to the coaches who said they would only talk about the game, for fear they would be misrepresented again.

Asked about the unity in the team, head coach Joseph Wilson replied: “Team unity is up where it should be.”

GFF vice-president Winston Callender disclosed that the squad should have been encamped at the GFF facility at Buxton but because of the present unrest, the facility was not used.

Officer in the GFF Secretariat, Lawrence Griffith, who was assisting with administrative details, yesterday said no mattress was borrowed from the Palms as stated in the article.

“There are extra mattresses provided by the YMCA. If fact, we have 40 new mattresses at Buxton,” Griffith said.
