AN inquest to determine the cause and circumstances by which Buxtonian Shaka Blair met his death and whether anyone is criminally responsible, is due to commence on July 8 next at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

According to a source, some seven persons have already been served with summons to testify at the proceedings. The lone civilian summoned is the dead man’s wife, Susan.

Blair, an ex-soldier, was shot dead by Police on April 7 last at Buxton. His death sparked protests by Buxtonians. As a result the riot Police were called out to quell the disturbances.

At his funeral there were clashes between Police and villagers, who also dug huge ditches on the Railway Embankment road causing traffic to be closed off.

The road was subsequently repaired by the Army, which on June 6, in collaboration with the Police embarked on `Operation Tourniquet’.

On June 19, President Bharrat Jagdeo held talks at his office with a representative group from Buxton. One of the issues raised was the killing of Blair by the Police.

With the President at this meeting were Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), Brigadier Michael Atherly; Commissioner of Police (Acting), Mr Floyd Mc Donald and his deputy, Mr Winston Felix.

President Jagdeo had advised the group then that the relevant files of the shooting along with the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had been submitted to the Magisterial District of Vigilance.

The President, who also advised the group that the convening of the Coroner’s Inquest was outside the purview of the Government, had expressed the hope that it would be held soon.
