Government has filed a $50 million lawsuit against BK International for alleged breach of contract, damages and losses resulting from the defendant's and its associates' negligence in the rehabilitation of the East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC) Embankment project.

A writ filed on May 3 by Attorney-General, Senior Counsel Doodnauth Singh, representing the government, stated that damages and pecuniary compensation in excess of $25 million and relative to the breach of the contract are being sought by the plaintiff. In excess of an additional $25 million is also being claimed for damages and loss caused by the defendant, its servants and/or agents in the performance of duties and obligations under the aforementioned contract plus costs and further relief as the court sees fit.

The government action stems from last year's collapse of a portion of the EDWC dam which BK was working on. The breach flooded the village of Cane Grove causing enormous damage. A report was then commissioned by the government which found BK and the state's National Drainage and Irrigation Board culpable.

Attorney-at-law Vijaya Jagnandan has responded on BK International's behalf.
