The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation is to be ready to perform abortions by March 1 as part of the current Health Sector Reform Project, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported yesterday.

This announcement was made by Minister of Health, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy.

And women could have abortions through the public health sector from February 1, but it will be done at the Family Planning Association of Guyana via the Georgetown Hospital, GINA quoted Ramsammy as saying.

The implementation of the Act was decided upon at a meeting last weekend, the minister told GINA.

During next month, the release stated, the Georgetown Hospital will see interested women and provide counselling in family planning, and other related topics, while putting mechanisms in place to have medical terminations done. The health minister said that this move is aimed primarily at reducing the incidence of incomplete abortions.
