THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) says it will continue to support actively efforts to bring the perpetrators of the murder of Dr. Walter Rodney 22 years ago today to justice.

In a tribute to the slain acclaimed scholar, the PPP faction of the ruling PPP/Civic alliance said Dr. Rodney was killed “in one of the most cowardly acts in the political history of the Caribbean.”

Dr. Rodney was at the time co-leader of the Working People’s Alliance, which had joined forces with the PPP and several other Guyanese organisations to oppose the repressive and undemocratic government of the day.

“On this the 22nd anniversary of his passing, the (PPP) salutes the memory of this outstanding patriot who paid the ultimate price for the freedoms that we now enjoy,” the party said.

“At this time in our country when some persons are seeking to reinvent history by suggesting that the PPP was opposed to Dr. Rodney, our party wishes to remind Guyanese that Walter Rodney, when he returned home to Guyana, spoke on a PPP platform and our party leaders shared fora with him. He was also active in the defence of PPP activist Arnold Rampersaud who was framed for treason.

“His tragic execution at the hands of a PNC (opposition People’s National Congress) agent cut short a life full of promise. Dr. Walter Rodney was one of the most brilliant scholars in the country. The nation of Guyana, which today enjoys the freedoms that he struggled for, is heavily indebted to Dr. Rodney and to his ideas of multi-racial solidarity and working class unity”, the PPP stated.

In 1993, the PPP/Civic government, elected in 1992 after being in opposition for 28 years, honoured Dr. Rodney posthumously with the nation’s highest award, the Order of Excellence.

In addition, the Dr. Walter Rodney Chair was established at the University of Guyana.

“The PPP pays tribute to the slain hero of our nation, Dr. Walter Rodney, as we recall his and the contributions of so many others to the causes which today the same forces who killed him are seeking to reverse”, the party stated.
