SAMUEL Barker (Jnr) made a welcome return to competitive cycling Sunday when a final burst to the finishing line provided him with a deserved win in the Surapana Farm Classic road race staged by Roraima Bikers Cycle Club in Linden.

The 30-lap event covered 72 kilometres and Barker covered the race in a time of one hour 48 minutes.

The race began outside the Guyana National Cooperative Bank along Republic Avenue into Purple Heart Street through Sir David Rose Avenue back into Republic Avenue where the race ended.

From a field of twenty starters, Barker (Jnr) pulled out the stops riding his newly acquired bike as he held off the strong finishing field in front of an appreciative crowd.

Barker (Jnr) edged out Jorge Emerson who was second on the line while third was veteran Vaugh Phillips and fourth came Continental Club rider Kevin Jones, fifth was Alain Smartt and sixth Nicholas Thakur .

With the exception of Jones, all the other riders who placed in the top positions were from Roraima Bikers Club.

The Roraima Bikers Cycle club event was sponsored by Surapana Farm of Linden with several cash incentives which included those for winners of the eight prime point sprint prizes.

Barker (Jnr) and Mark Lewis captured six of the eight sprint prizes on offer, each getting three while the others were won by Smartt and Thakur, one each.

Witnessing the event were Manager of Surapana Farm Mr Orin Gordon, Linmine's CEO Mr Horace James, Region Ten Sports Officer Ivan Persaud and former National athlete Aubrey "Skinny" Wilson.

Ariel Gordon, the manager’s daughter, handed over the top incentive to the winner Barker (Jnr). The presentation was held outside Pepsi's Night Spot. (Joe Chapman).
