THE Miss Universe 2002 Pageant will officially start this weekend.
The 76 delegates, including Guyana's Mia Rahaman, are to arrive in Puerto Rico May 10-12 for three weeks of rehearsals, tours, parties and much more before the final telecast on May 29.

Information on Mia's routine in the United States in preparation for Puerto Rico suggests that the road to the Miss Universe contest is paved with hard work.

Since April 22, Guyana's Mia has been living at the luxurious Courtyard Marriot Hotel in Washington D.C., just a short walk from the White House.

She is surrounded daily by a support team composed of Guyanese and American professionals.

The team includes event coordinator and transportation officer, Mr. Lenox Molineux of Federal Management Systems (FMS), Manager/Chaperone, Ms. Nikolet Trotman and Conditioning Trainer/Chaperone, Ms. Regina Spencer.

Mia's trainers are: Mr. Robert Dover, Trainer of beauty pageant contestants; Ms. Liane Angus, Miss District of Columbia and Miss USA first runner-up 2001; Ms. Anita Sanders, former New York and Washington D.C. runway and photographic model; Mrs. Omarosa Satllworth, winner of 23 beauty pageant titles and trainer of a number of beauty pageant winners; American designer, Mr. LeRoi Carey; and Mr. Roger Gary, outstanding Guyanese designer based in New York.

Mia and her support team start her day at 08:00 hrs with an exercise programme at a Washington D.C. private sports and health club. Her exercise programme includes aerobics and weight training, along with a daily, vigorous game of squash, followed by swimming, jacuzzi, sauna and steam baths.

Her diet is restricted to a small amount of protein, vegetables, fruits, juices and lots of bottled water.

Between April 23-28, her other activities included walking and posture training, review and coordination of wardrobe and wardrobe needs, selection of gown design and measurements, video viewing for self analysis, video viewing of previous Miss Universe pageants, professional massage, manicure, pedicure, facial, shopping, receipt of gifts of beauty treatment products and exercise apparel.

FMS is bearing the financial and organisational burden of Miss Guyana 2002.

Here is an interview Mia gave to the Miss Universe Organisation as posted on their website:

Who are your heroes? Why?

In general, I admire and respect everyday people such as teachers, fire fighters, and policemen and women who go out of their way and put their lives on the line for others. However, my one true hero would have to be myself. Others can only inspire so much, but when all is said and done, it is from within that I have to draw the strength to get up every day as I pursue my goals and make a positive contribution to the world around me.

Are you currently a student?
No.
Are you currently employed?
Yes. I am an events and promotions coordinator.

Please list educational/technical/professional schools you have attended and the type of certificate or degree awarded:

Bishops' High School Johnson and Wales University

What do you hope to be doing in 10 years?

In ten years, I hope to operate my own successful eco-tourism resort in the rain forest of Guyana.
