WORLD number one welterweight challenger Ricardo Mayorga baited champion Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis all through a conference call for the press earlier yesterday, in advance of their WBA welterweight title showdown on Saturday, but Lewis calmly took Mayorga's comments in stride until moments before the call ended. Then things got tense.

Mayorga: “After Saturday, he’s going to have to start thinking about another job. I’m going to retire him from boxing. I’m going to demonstrate the boxer I am.

In addition to my right hand, I also have a pair of balls. I want to see you at the hotel. I haven’t seen you here yet. I think you’re running from me. I want to see you in Reading. Boxing was made for men, not runners.

I’m going to take your title away because you are a nobody, a complete nobody. I think you’re not going to show up. I want to look you in the eye so I know you’re going to fight. Please come to the hotel to make sure the fight’s on, and you’re not going to run away.”

Sixhead: “I’ll be there, I’m coming today after I train. You have a big mouth and I’m going to shut it on Saturday.”

Butch Sanchez from the Lewis camp: “Hey, they’re going to carry you out horizontal out of the ring.”

Mayorga: “I don’t know why you’re doing any talking, you’re not fighting. The only time you’re going to pick me up is to raise me after I win the championship to carry me out of the ring. All of the corner-men, the managers - I don’t know why they’re talking. They’re not doing the fighting.”

Mayorga: “Get as many photos as you can with the title because it’s not going to be yours after Saturday. After I get done with you, you’re going to be like one of those old-time fighters who roam the streets saying ‘I used to be a champion, I used to be a champion.’”

Butch Sanchez “He knows in his heart of hearts that he is not in the same class as Andrew ‘Six Heads’ Lewis. We know he’s just trying to motivate himself the way James Page did. James Page did a lot of talking, too, but we expect the same outcome.

Sixhead: “I’ve got one more thing to say. I’m going to hit Mayorga so hard, he’s going to forget who's his manager, who's his trainer….”

Mayorga: “When are your six heads going to come to Reading?

Earlier, ‘Sixhead’ seemingly wasn't letting Mayorga's comments get to him. Mayorga said, "I am going to demonstrate to the world, and especially Lewis, that the Matador is who I am - I am a killer. I have studied Lewis very well, and I know his ability. I am going to take care of business within three rounds.

I am fighting for my family, to get them out of the ghetto. I am not fighting for profit. Lewis is fighting for the money. After Saturday he is going to have to take another job because he will have to retire from boxing."

Lewis' response at the time was, "He has a big mouth. Other people are always talking, but I do not pay them any mind because I am a world champion. Words do not bother me. I am the world champion and I am just going to take care of my business."

Mayorga vowed, "In the beginning I am going to break his ribs. I consider myself the next world champion. I am going to beat him. I am in 100 per cent good condition, and I am going to be a world champion in 10 minutes."

Lewis said, "He says he is going to knock me out in three rounds and break my ribs, but he knows I am going to win. He does not know what he is saying. It does not really bother me."

Apparently, it did.
