Honouring the dead
Stabroek News
January 31, 2002

Dear Editor,

Since hearing on the newscast on T.V that the police propose honouring those policemen who died in the course of duty, my mind has been in a state of turmoil. Whereas I was eagerly awaiting word from the President of the State that the Special Target Squad was being disbanded and that new orders have now been issued to the police to avoid the seemingly criminal use of their firearms; instead we have this transparent attempt at a diversion.

Perhaps it is now up to the Mothers In Black (and I have always wondered if there are no Fathers In Black) and civil society in general to band themselves together to erect a Vietnam type wall whereon will be inscribe the names of all those persons shot and killed by the police in the course of duty.

Perhaps only then will we have the matter in true perspective.

Yours faithfully,

R. Joseph Eleazar,

Attorney-at-Law
