El Dorado Special Reserve rum has for the second year running been adjudged the best rum worldwide when the 15-year-old rum was awarded both the Gold medal and the Wray and Nephew Trophy in the International Wines and Spirits Competition.

This was announced on Wednesday evening at a reception held at Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL) Head Office, Kingston, at which there was also the launching of the Special Edition El Dorado 25 Years Old Millennium rum and a new line of liqueurs--El Dorado Rum Cream and Chocolate Liqueurs.

Speaking to special invitees, including Prime Minister Sam Hinds and Chancellor of the Judiciary Cecil Kennard, DDL Chairman, Yesu Persaud, said that the occasion was a momentous one. He observed that only a few years ago his company had seen the impending changes in the business world and decided to improve its image and this resulted in the present success.

The chairman said that the time had come to provide more value-added products. He lamented that the government was not doing enough to provide businesses with incentives and noted that while companies in Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago were given export allowances, the same could not be said for Guyanese businesses.

Prime Minister Hinds lauded DDL for being one of the flag bearers that other Guyanese were proud to follow. He asserted that his government and the President were doing everything possible to work with businesses in Guyana.

A limited amount of the Special Edition Rum will be available to the Guyanese public at US$250 a bottle.
