The Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Guyana has presented a number of posters and booklets to the Guyana Human Rights Association (GHRA) to aid it in its campaign to promote racial harmony.

Economic Advisor of the EU Delegation, Maria Ralha handed over 500 copies of the booklet titled "What? Me? A Racist?" and 500 posters illustrating the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the GHRA on Wednesday, during a simple ceremony at its headquarters at Austin Place and Hadfield Street.

GHRA executive member Shanaza Ally received the publications on behalf of the GHRA. The posters were printed by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the booklets of cartoons, designed for teachers to use when addressing the subject of racism with young people, were produced by the European Commission.

In brief remarks Ralha noted that the booklets were created for internal use by the EU to deal with race problems experienced in Europe. She noted that it is very relevant to the situation prevailing in Guyana. She noted that because of its acceptance, the EU is planning the publication of a second edition.

According to Human Rights Education Coordinator, Merle McCormack the copies of the publications will be used in the campaign for racial harmony designated "Holding onto Friendships", being conducted by the Rights of the Child (ROC) under the guidance of the GHRA.

The "Holding onto Friendships" campaign will be launched on November 20 on the 10th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The publication will also be included in the 10th anniversary information kit on the Convention on the Rights of the Child which will be distributed to schools through the joint Human Rights Education Programme being conducted by the Ministry of Education, the GHRA and Amnesty International.
