Police travelled to the North West District early last week to investigate reports that notorious wanted man Lindon London aka 'Blackie' had been sighted in the area but they came up blank, reports state.

This could not be confirmed by the Guyana Police Force last week, but its Public Relations Officer, Senior Superintendent Ivelaw Whittaker, said investigations were continuing into the America Street cambio robbery for which London and alleged accomplice Andrew Peter Douglas are wanted.

Sources say a police team was flown into Kwebana, Region One, on Sunday from where they travelled down the Waini River by boat in search of the fugitives.

According to reports, an abandoned camp believed to be that of the wanted men was found in a timber concession in the area but there was no sign of London or Douglas.

Police Commissioner Laurie Lewis told reporters after a recent press conference that the force was in contact with its counterparts in the Caribbean and they were put on the alert to look for any sign of the wanted men.

He said ranks had been despatched to the islands to search for them.

The two are wanted for the attempted murder of five men, including a policeman, and the robbery of D. Singh and Sons cambio and another currency dealer on September 22.

Two men have since been charged and refused bail. The four accused along with Terry Madhoo, who was subsequently killed in a police shootout, are alleged to have committed the robberies using a hail of gunfire to cover their escape. They were reportedly clad in bullet-proof vests and toted sophisticated guns when they carried out what has been described as the most daring robbery Guyana has ever seen.
