Miss UG pageant promises rich mix of culture, talent

The Miss University of Guyana (UG) pageant will be staged at the National Cultural Centre on October 3, and it is being touted as a rich mixture of culture, modelling and talent.

Who will wear the coveted crown? Here's a look at some of the contestants.

Shaundell Ann Ferrier, 23, is one of the two oldest contestants vying for the crown. The petite young lady will be promoting the unity of people if she cops the crown. Ferrier is a second year UG student majoring in History. Her hobbies are reading and singing.

Allana Azeez, 18, is aspiring to be a manager and is currently a second year Social Science student at UG. If she cops the crown the 5'5" young lady will be focusing on ethnic insecurity. Azeez loves writing songs and fashion designing. She will perform one of her songs at the pageant as her talent piece.

Yoletta Bynoe always has a ready smile even when she is in training. Bynoe, whose platform is deforestation, is a 5'7" slim young lady in her second year at UG majoring in Agriculture. The 19-year-old Bynoe who hopes to be a forester one day likes modelling and dancing among other things.

The baby of the lot, who is also the tallest, is 16-year-old Melissa Jacobs. Jacobs is 5'11" and she is a second year student majoring in Chemistry. This stunning beauty's ambition is to one day become a paediatrician and if she cops the crown she will be focusing on street children. She also has a special interest in sick children. She loves dancing, modelling, playing basketball and touring.

Murley Sarah Panday-David, 23, is only 4'9", but has the world of energy which compensates for her height. Panday-David, who was the last contestant to join, loves dancing, socialising and reading. She hopes to become a businesswoman one day and is now in her second year at UG majoring in Economics.

Confident, Tonya Maddison who is 20 years old has not fully decided what her platform is, but has a slogan that reads "Give blood save a life". Maddison loves reading, playing squash, cooking and roller blading. She is in her second year in the faculty of Social Sciences majoring in Economics and she hopes to one day become an economist.

If 21-year-old Leanna Damond wins the coveted crown she will focus on the shortage of teachers in the country. This 5'9" beauty pays special interest to dancing, modelling, swimming and reading. She hopes to own a bank one day and at the moment is in her second year majoring in Economics. Nineteen-year-old Farah Yassem will have a serious look at AIDS as it relates to drugs and pre-marital sex should she win the title.

Yassem is 5'1" and she loves dancing, modelling, cycling and meeting people. The second year UG student hopes to become a paediatrician.
